According
to the legend, the fall of an apple inspired Newton to create the
theory of gravitation. No such thing ever happened.
The
toilsome development of modern physics in the seventeenth century,
which was often obstructed by prejudice and by different interests,
finally culminated after a long process in the theory of gravitation.
It was
the first body of physical theory developed according to our present
conception. This is why the study of this subject is especially
interesting.
Furthermore,
the law of universal gravitation has allowed the human race to begin to
understand the cosmos in which we live.
