A mining wheel chock is going to be one heavy duty piece of safety equipment. In the mining industry, an operator needs to concentrate not only on OSHA regulations, but also the extensive standards set up by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Two MSHA standards exist and are below:
- For surface operations is standard #30 CFR 56.14207 - Parking procedures for unattended equipment.
Mobile equipment shall not be left unattended unless the controls are placed in the park position and the parking brake, if provided, is set. When parked on a grade, the wheels or tracks of mobile equipment shall be either chocked or turned into a bank.
- The MSHA standard for underground mines is #30 CFR 57.14207 - Parking procedures for unattended equipment

As you can see, the standard is exactly the same but is suitable for both above ground and underground mines. This shows the economies of the US governing bodies of safety regarding the use of a mining wheel chock. OSHA specifications are actually a bit more specific, and they refer more to the type of vehicle than just the action of chocking. The reason for the specificity is that OSHA covers a broader industry than just mining.
Chock Sizes
With mining vehicles, they can be all shapes and sizes and work on many types of terrain. An off-road chock comes in several dimensions of height, width and length, with the smallest all-terrain for mining at 15 1/2" x 8 " x 8 " and 8 to 9 pounds, and the largest - can weigh in at 77 pounds and 30" long by 22" wide and 22" tall. Using the Mining Wheel Chock
As noted above, the larger chocks for the big trucks with tire sizes from 110" to 165" most likely will need a cart to be put in place, yet the key is placing it correctly. The truck should be in Park and the parking brake in place before chocking. It will need the curved edge facing the tire, centered and in the direction of the grade. The vehicle must be on a firm surface and more than one pair may be needed. Guidelines for using it will probably be molded into the chock itself.
