The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that as many as 99,000 people in American hospitals die annually from hospital infections they acquired in the hospital. This is an alarming number of people but the CDC is making strides to decrease this figure by forcing hospitals to keep track of patients that suffered death because of a hospital infection. Surprisingly, before the mandatory count, almost no hospitals kept track of how many deaths were occurring in their hospitals from infectious diseases while in the hospital.
By keeping a head count of patient deaths in hospitals due to the spread of infections; it can help the CDC better understand how to prevent such untimely deaths. The problem with hospital infections is many people entering the hospital are weakened immune systems and airborne bacteria are more likely to spread to such patients.
Many hospitals insert catheters when patients enter the hospital if they are unable to walk or extremely ill. It makes it easier for the patient and the nursing staff because the patient does not have to get out of bed to use the restroom.
The problem with the widely used catheter use is this is how healthcare professionals spread urinary tract infections. Even though nurses wear gloves while inserting the catheter, if they happen to touch the end of the catheter to anything or leave it opened before inserting it into the patient, the risk of urinary tract infection can develop.
Many hospitals have begun to administer antibiotics before a patient undergoes surgery. By doing so, if the patient encounters any hospital infections, the antibiotic kills it before it has a chance to make the patient sick.
These hospital infections are acutely preventable and having this many people die each year from them is alarming, which is why the CDC has taken such an interest in getting data from hospitals.
There are steps that patients can take to prevent their chances of acquiring hospital infections when they have to be in the hospital. Firstly, before checking into the hospital or when moving to an area, find out what your hospitals infection rate is, you have the right to known and you are entitled to have this information. If you know you have to have surgery, ensure that the hospital performing the procedure administers antibiotics at least one hour before the operation.
Always wash your hands when in the hospital and make sure the hospital staff does as well. If the doctor or hospital plans to place catheter, find out your other options rather than having a catheter. Hospital catheters are standard practice in many facilities but are also one of the ways that people catch urinary tract infections.
Lastly, it is crucial when entering a hospital or knowing you will be in the hospital to ask questions and realize you have a right to ask in order to protect yourself. Those with weakened immune systems especially need to find out as much information as possible. 横浜市 病院検索
